Modern technology, in all its various forms, has changed the way we live our lives, but unfortunately, (26)

has not always been for the better. A number of things we used to value highly are gradually disappearing or have disappeared altogether. Take punctuality, for example: before mobile phones, people had to keep their appointments and get to meetings (27) time.

Now, it seems, it is perfectly acceptable to send a text five minutes before you are due to meet, telling your friend or colleague not to expect you for another half an hour or so. The Internet, too, has had a negative effect on our (28) _. Rudeness seems to be the language of debate on any site which (29) users to give their opinions. Anonymity makes it easier for people to insult anyone that has views which are different from their own. They lose all sense of politeness and restraint, safe in the knowledge that they (30) never be identified.

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Tornadoes (also called turisters) are formed over land during thunderstorms, when a column of rapidly circling air forms under a thunderstorm and extends down to the ground. Tornadoes can be extremely destructive, with winds reaching 480 kilometers (or 300 miles) per hour and lasting up to an hour. In a destructive tornado, the damage path can be up to one and a half kilometers (or one mile) wide and over 97 kilometers (or 60 miles) long. The strong winds can uproot trees, lift cars, and damage buildings. They are often deadly and can destroy entire neighborhoods. Predicting a tornado is difficult because they form very quickly, with little or no warning. Authorities may post a tornado watch or tornado warning. A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible, usually because there are strong thunderstorms in the area, and people should watch for tornadoes to form. A tornado warning means that tornadoes have been seen in the area and people should take cover immediately. Unfortunately, there is visually little time for people to evacuate once a tornado has formed The United States has the highest number of tornadoes in the world each year, mostly in the Midwest and southern states. They occur most often in the spring and early summer, especially during the afternoon and early evening when thunderstorms are more common. Tornadoes are also common in Australia and Bangladesh.

Throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, citizens of the United States maintained a bias against big cities. Most lived in farms and in small towns and believed cities to be centers of corruption, vrime, poverty. and moral degradation. Their distrust was caused, in part, by a national ideology that proclaimed farming the greatest occupation and rural living superior to urban living. This attitude prevailed even as the number of urban dwellers increased and cities became an essential feature of the national landscape. Gradually, economic reality overcame ideology. Thousands abandoned the precarious life on the farm for more secure and better paving jobs in the city. But when these people migrated from the countryside, they carried their fears and suspicion with them. These new urb.unities, already convinced that cities were overwhelmed with great problems, eageily embraced the progressive reforms that promised to bring order out of the chaos of the city. One of many reforms came in the area of public utilities. Water and sewerage systems were usually operated by municipal governments, but the gas and electric networks were privately owned. Reformers feared thit the privately owned utility companies would charge exorbitant rates for these essential services and deliver them only to people who could afford them. Some city and state governments responded by regulating the utility companies, but a number of cities began to supply these services themselves. Proponents of

el

these reforms argued that public ownership and regulation would insure widespread access to these utilities and guarantee a fair price. While some reforms focused on government and public behavior, others looked at the cities as a whole. Civic leaders, convinced that physical environment influenced human behavior, argued that cities should develop master plans to guide their future growth and development. City planning was nothing new, but the rapid industrialization and urban growth of the late nineteenth century took place without any consideration for order. Urban renewal in the twentieth century followed several courses. Some cities introduced plans to completely rebuild the city core. Most other cities contented themselves with zoning plans for regulating future growth. Certain parts of town were restricted to residential use, while others were set aside for industrial or commercial development.
